Front vs Back Print T-Shirts: Which Should You Choose?

White T-shirt with a resting goose and Goose Bump lettering on the back

A front print puts the artwork where you can see it while wearing the tee; a back print places it behind you. Your usual layers, bag and preferred garment shape can help you decide which placement suits your everyday outfits.

The difference is practical as well as visual. An open overshirt can frame a front graphic, while a jacket covers artwork on the back. Start with the way you actually wear a T-shirt rather than choosing from a front-only thumbnail.

Front print: make the artwork the starting point

Rewind places multicoloured lettering and a “Back to Better Times” search bar across the front, with a plain back. The Investment Disclosure tee uses a cream handheld-console graphic on black, also on the front.

Try plain trousers or denim to give the lettering space. If you add an open shirt, check that its edges leave the important part of the graphic visible. A cross-body strap can run across a front design, so include your everyday bag when you picture the outfit.

Back print: keep the rear of the outfit visible

Goose Bump keeps the front plain and places the resting goose and lettering on the back. Go To Jail also uses a plain front, with its cartoon officer and slogan behind you.

A backpack or jacket can cover a back graphic. That may be fine if you prefer a quieter look while travelling and want the artwork visible when the layer comes off. If showing the design all day matters to you, think about how much time you spend wearing that layer.

Two-sided artwork: check both product views

Clean Mind has a red and pink front graphic and a larger illustrated back print. It is also a long sleeve tee, so the placement is only one part of the choice. Read its fabric, sleeve and fit details as well.

Do not assume that every product has artwork on both sides. Look for labelled front and back views in the gallery and read the placement notes on that specific page.

Compare three actual designs

Design Placement Fit and fabric
Rewind Front graphic; plain back Oversized; 240 GSM cotton
Goose Bump Back graphic; plain front Regular-loose; 220 GSM cotton-rich blend
Clean Mind Front and back graphics Oversized long sleeve; 305 GSM cotton

Artwork placement also matters when putting the tee away. Use our step-by-step graphic tee folding guide to check where the design sits before choosing a shelf fold, drawer fold or travel roll.

Fit and placement do different jobs

A back print does not automatically mean an oversized cut. Goose Bump is regular-loose, while Go To Jail is oversized. Use the fit comparison and garment measurement guide to choose the shape separately from the artwork.

Three checks before choosing

  1. Find the front and back views in the product gallery.
  2. Imagine the tee with the jacket and bag you normally use.
  3. Compare the individual size chart, sleeve length and material details.
